Welcome to Family Life Ministry
“He tends His flock like a shepherd. He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; and He gently leads those that have young.” Isaiah 40:11
I hope that the summer months find you spending time with your family and enjoying the outdoors. Recreation Ministry
My name is Dave Merrill, and I am humbled to be serving as the new Director of Recreation Ministry at TWUMC effective July 1st. My wife, Kara, and I are extremely excited to transition into the Woodlands community and build relationships with each of you in the very near future.
Kara and I have spent the last 4 years completing our masters’ degrees at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. The Lord has led us through two amazing years of marriage, and we anticipate the best is yet to come. We are very passionate about our God, our family, our friends and our callings in this world.
The Lord has truly placed a desire in my heart to share his redemptive nature through the avenue of recreation. All too often I find recreation has become simply another term for intramural sports or play. While these are indeed aspects of recreation, I also see it as limiting our perspective on its true definition. I understand recreation as active participation in life that contributes to the restoration of one’s being with God as He intended (Body, Mind and Soul). To sum that up, it’s doing anything that brings you back into relationship with our great God.
Our vision for the future of the recreation ministry is to provide the desired recreational activities that restore people back to God’s intent of wholeness and holiness. In order to accomplish this task effectively, we will need to hear from you in the days ahead.
Currently we have the following events on the horizon: Texas Boot Camp, Stroller Fit, Restore the Core and Upward Summer Camps.
Thank you very much for allowing me a chance to share a piece of my heart with you. I look forward to growing in His image together!
Blessings,
Dave Merrill

Special Needs Ministry
Wow - July is here already and it is getting HOT! We hope that you have had an opportunity to check out the new Special Blessings playground with your family. It has some nice shade trees to help keep you cool.
Mom's Bible Study will be meeting July 10 and 24th in the Jones Library at 7pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other moms who are living with disability. This study is set up so that you can just drop in. There is no preparation needed, just come in and enjoy the
fellowship and friendships.
Our Family Worship Service on the 20th will be awesome! Come by and hear our friend Matt Brower lead worship, and hear the message that Toby Bonar has for us. Toby is our new Duke intern, and we are looking forward to having him with us in worship. Invite a friend or neighbor to join us.
We are ready to "Get On Board" and learn the Waves of Truth on the 23rd with our Special Blessings Vacation Bible School! We will finish out the week with a Family Swim Party on Friday night - a great way to keep cool!
Enjoy your 4th of July celebrations this week, and remember that we do not have shadows available on Sunday the 6th since there is no Sunday School Classes.

Sunday Mornings REMIXed
The rest of July we will be covering Genesis 43-50. Joseph will be reunited with his brothers as they seek grain to survive. He will also reunite with his beloved father, Jacob, before Jacob's death. We learn so much about forgiveness, caring for our family and honoring them from these passages. Our students can learn so much from the Biblical example of Joseph. His story is an amazing example of how to choose to trust God and His plan for our life even in the midst of our struggles. It also reinforces that God is faithful to us in spite of our circumstance.
Be sure to ask your student about our prayer requests. We have had many prayers answered recently and I would love for them to share those stories with you. You might also like to pray for some of our requests together as a family.

Children's Ministry
A friend of mine emailed me the other day with a funny exchange between her and her four year old daughter. She said that she (the Mom) tried to eat the last of the Girl Scout cookies (the thin mints) that they had and her daughter came in the room and said “Mommy! Something smells delicious in my nose! – Can I have one?” She said that fortunately she was satisfied with something else. Normal that story doesn’t register on anyone’s radar except for the fact that they are missionaries in Uganda and those cookies were shipped to them by her mom.
I guess that there are times that I realize that I take many things for granted (Thin Mints being one of them!) and there are many other times that I never even think about all of the blessings that God pours out on me and my family. We try to teach our kids to be thankful, but sometimes it is tough with so much. In a couple of days, 60 people from Planet 56 (our 5th and 6th grade ministry) will fly out to Costa Rica for a week. These kids and their parents will go and work in the poor part of San Jose and run a VBS, feeding programs, work programs and just plain minister to those who do not have the blessings that we have. It will happen at two different churches at the same time ministering to over 300 kids. These kids from our church come back with their eyes opened and understand the meaning of these terms that we use like “Thankfulness”, “Blessings” and “Abundance”.
Pray for these kids and their families that God continues to give them great health, a great spirit and opens their eyes and their minds to what He can do through them…a child. And remember to be thankful…not just thankful, but really grasp the meaning of it and pass it on to your kids.
